SOFEA Launches Exciting Materials Science Lab to Inspire Local Youth

SOFEA, an organisation supporting young people aged 14-25 who have found traditional education challenging, is set to launch a pioneering materials science lab at its Didcot headquarters.

The project aims to ignite a passion for science among local youth and open doors to employment opportunities with companies at Milton Park and Harwell Campus.

The lab, which is part of SOFEA’s broader Powerhouse Pathway programme, will provide hands-on learning experiences and practical training for students. With an emphasis on materials science, the initiative seeks to build a bridge between education and employment by preparing young people for apprenticeships and entry-level roles in the thriving science and engineering sectors nearby.

“At SOFEA, we are passionate about providing young people with the knowledge and skills they need for future employment. Many of our students live locally, and we want to prepare them for the broad range of opportunities within the Science Vale area, from Harwell to Culham and Milton Park.”- Bill Hanks, a volunteer at SOFEA who will be leading the science programme.

The programme is scheduled to begin in September, but SOFEA is still in need of equipment to fully utilise the lab’s potential. The science programme represents a significant addition to SOFEA’s curriculum, expanding its capacity to engage and equip young people with essential scientific knowledge.

SOFEA is calling on local businesses and individuals to help bring this vision to life by contributing equipment or offering mentorship opportunities. This unique initiative promises to not only enhance the lives of the young people involved but also strengthen links between education and industry in the region.
