Benefits from life sciences clustering

Community and Cluster Dynamics – How life sciences clusters can enrich local communities

A new report and framework from MedCity, the cluster organisation for the health and life sciences sector in London, investigates the relationship between life sciences clusters and the wider, co-located community. Specifically the report examines how local communities can benefit from the presence of life sciences clusters.

The agglomeration benefits of clustering, combined with the high GVA generated by life science jobs, provide an opportunity for local government to capitalise on life science clusters for the benefit of the wider community.  The report draws together a wide evidence base and presentations case studies from the UK and from international clusters. Specifically, the report provides a framework for considering the benefits of life sciences clusters considering the following factors:

  • Placemaking
  • GVA and job creation
  • Education and training
  • Local health
