Advanced Oxford launches updated Low Carbon and Environment Business Directory

Advanced Oxford has updated its Low Carbon and Environment Business Directory, which now lists 276 innovation-focused companies operating across 18 sectors in Oxfordshire. The directory brings together innovation-based businesses working in the low carbon and environmental goods and services sector, all of which have a base or commitment in the region.

The directory has been created to support collaboration and networking across the sector, and to provide a single, accessible resource for businesses, economic development bodies, researchers, and policymakers with an interest in Oxfordshire’s green economy.

What the directory covers

The Low Carbon and Environmental Goods and Services (LCEGS) sector is defined by the UK Office for National Statistics as providing “environmental products and activities, renewable energy and emerging low carbon activities such as alternative fuels, building technologies, nuclear power and carbon finance.”

Companies in the directory span a wide range of subsectors, including:

  • Agriculture and food
  • Automotive and transport
  • Carbon offsetting
  • Construction
  • Education and research
  • Energy technologies and generation
  • Engineering
  • Environmental services and consultancy
  • Information technology and services
  • Life sciences
  • Material science and chemistry
  • Renewables and environment
  • Sustainability
  • Water and waste management

Each listing includes key information such as sector classifications, SIC codes, founding date, and website, compiled through desk-based research using publicly available sources.

A growing sector

Oxfordshire has long been recognised as a significant contributor to the UK’s low carbon economy. When Oxfordshire Green Tech was launched in 2019, low carbon businesses and organisations accounted for approximately 7% of Oxfordshire’s economy. The breadth and diversity of companies now represented in the directory reflects the continued growth and ambition of this sector across the region.

Advanced Oxford is committed to building a more complete and accurate picture of Oxfordshire’s low carbon economy over time. The directory is intended as a living resource, and we welcome input from businesses and organisations across the sector to help ensure it remains current and comprehensive.

Is your business listed?

The directory has been compiled through desk-based research and is not an exhaustive list. We encourage all businesses working in the low carbon and environmental sector in Oxfordshire to:

  • Check whether your company is already listed and that your details are accurate.
  • Submit your details if your company is not yet included, using the form on the directory page.

Companies do not need to be headquartered in Oxfordshire to be included. If your organisation has a base, commitment, or meaningful  activity in the region, we would be pleased to consider adding you.

Find the directory

The Low Carbon and Environment Business Directory is available now under the Data and Resources section of the Advanced Oxford website. To view the directory or submit your company’s details, visit: https://www.advancedoxford.com/green-recovery/business-directory/

The business directory was developed to accompany the “Powering up the Green Recovery” report published in November, 2020 by Advanced Oxford.  In 2020, Advanced Oxford identified 160 innovative companies working within Oxfordshire as part of the green economy.  The Directory was updated in 2023, when we saw growth in company numbers.  The new version of the Directory contains 276 companies, representing over 70% growth in the number of innovative green economy businesses operating in the region since the Directory was first compiled.
